What is Claude? Anthropic's AI explained

Claude is the AI from Anthropic. What makes it different from ChatGPT, and why are more and more businesses choosing it?

What is Claude?

Claude is an AI assistant made by Anthropic. Just like ChatGPT, you can have conversations with it, write texts and ask questions. But Claude is built differently - with safety and reliability as the starting point.

The name "Claude" is named after Claude Shannon, the founder of information theory. That's no coincidence. Anthropic deliberately positions itself as the company that builds AI in a responsible way.

Claude is available via claude.ai, via the Anthropic API for developers, and as part of business platforms. More and more businesses are choosing Claude because of the quality of the output, the ability to process long documents and the focus on safe AI.

Who is Anthropic?

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by Dario and Daniela Amodei, together with other former OpenAI employees. They left OpenAI due to disagreements about the safety approach.

Their conviction: AI is becoming powerful enough to pose real risks, and the companies building AI must treat safety as a priority - not as an afterthought. Anthropic presents itself as an AI safety company that makes products, not a product company that also does safety.

The company has raised billions of dollars from investors including Google and Salesforce. With that money they fund both fundamental safety research and the development of Claude.

Constitutional AI: how Claude is built differently

Anthropic's technical approach is called Constitutional AI. With most AI models, safety is added after the fact - the model is first trained, and then you teach it which answers it shouldn't give.

Constitutional AI works differently. The model receives a set of principles (a "constitution") and learns to evaluate itself against those principles. It checks its own answers and adjusts them before you see them.

This leads to a few concrete differences:

  • Fewer hallucinations - Claude more often says "I don't know" instead of making up an answer
  • Nuance - Claude more often gives multiple perspectives instead of a definitive (but possibly incorrect) answer
  • Refusal with explanation - When Claude doesn't want to do something, it explains why, instead of a generic "I can't do that"
  • Consistency - The safety guarantees are more stable, even with unusual prompts

This doesn't mean Claude is perfect. It makes mistakes, has blind spots and can still produce incorrect information. But the floor is higher - the worst mistakes occur less frequently.

The Claude models

Anthropic offers three model lines, each for a different use:

Claude Haiku - The fastest and cheapest model. Ideal for tasks that need to be fast and don't require deep reasoning: classification, summaries, customer service responses, data extraction. Responds in milliseconds.

Claude Sonnet - The all-rounder. Balance between speed, cost and quality. Suitable for most business tasks: writing texts, producing code, analyzing documents, answering complex questions. This is the model most businesses use.

Claude Opus - The most powerful model. For tasks that require deep reasoning and maximum quality: complex analyses, scientific questions, advanced programming, strategic thinking. Slower and more expensive, but delivers the best results.

The choice depends on your use case. For a chatbot answering frequently asked questions, Haiku is ideal. For an AI Agent that thinks along about business strategy, you choose Sonnet or Opus.

What can you use Claude for?

Claude is versatile. These are the most common business applications:

Processing documents Claude can process documents up to 200,000 tokens - that's roughly a 500-page book. Upload a contract, annual report or technical document and ask questions. "What are the risks in this contract?" "Summarize this report in 5 points." "Which clauses deviate from our standard contract?"

Writing and editing text From marketing copy to internal memos. Claude writes clearly, adapts to your style and can work in multiple languages. It's strong at reformulating complex texts into understandable language.

Programming Claude is one of the best AI models for code. It writes, debugs and explains code in dozens of programming languages. Claude Sonnet and Opus in particular perform well on complex programming tasks.

Analysis and reasoning Present Claude with a business problem and it thinks along in a structured way. It identifies pros and cons, asks follow-up questions and comes up with substantiated recommendations. The quality of reasoning is where Claude distinguishes itself from many competitors.

Translating Claude translates texts and understands the context while doing so. It doesn't translate word for word but takes into account the intent, the audience and the register (formal vs informal).

Claude vs ChatGPT

The two are often compared. Both are powerful language models, but they have different strengths:

Where Claude is stronger: - Processing longer documents (larger context window) - Nuanced, safe answers - Fewer hallucinations - Quality of reasoning and analysis - Consistency on complex tasks

Where ChatGPT is stronger: - Larger ecosystem (plugins, GPTs, integrations) - Multimodal (generating images, sound, video) - Broader name recognition - More third-party integrations

Comparable: - Text quality for general tasks - Multilingual capabilities - Programming skills - Price (similar price ranges)

The choice depends on your priorities. Want a broad ecosystem with many integrations? ChatGPT. Want maximum quality and safety for business use? Claude.

Claude for businesses

Anthropic offers multiple ways to deploy Claude commercially:

Claude.ai - The web interface. Suitable for individual use and small teams. Pro subscription for more usage and access to all models.

Anthropic API - For developers who want to build Claude into their own products. You pay per token (word), no fixed subscription. Suitable for custom integrations.

Amazon Bedrock / Google Cloud Vertex AI - Claude is available via AWS and Google Cloud. Convenient if you already work in those ecosystems and want to keep your data there.

As part of an AI Agent - Claude models can run as the "brain" of an AI Agent - an ongoing system that knows your business and is reachable via multiple channels.

Safety and privacy

For businesses that work with sensitive data, Anthropic's safety approach is relevant:

  • No training on your data - With API usage and business subscriptions, Anthropic does not train on your input
  • SOC 2 Type II - Anthropic has this security certification
  • EU data - Via AWS eu-central-1 you can keep data in Europe
  • Audit logging - Business customers get insight into API usage
  • Responsible disclosure - Anthropic regularly publishes safety research and model evaluations

The emphasis on safety is not just marketing. Anthropic publishes technical papers about their approach, has models externally tested and actively participates in AI regulation.

How aiagent.nl chooses the right model

At aiagent.nl we don't default to one model. We advise per client which model best fits the task, budget and quality requirements. The market moves fast and today's best model isn't necessarily tomorrow's best model.

Model-independent - We work with all leading models: Claude (Anthropic), GPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google) and open-source alternatives. Each model has strengths and we help you make the right trade-off.

Quality over brand - A customer service agent has different requirements than a data analysis agent. We select based on performance, safety, speed and cost - not brand name.

Advisory as part of the service - Model choice isn't a one-time decision. We monitor performance and advise when a new model is a better fit. That advisory is part of what we do.

Long context - Modern models can process enormous amounts of business documentation. The agent knows your manuals, procedures and FAQs - not because you send them every time, but because they are included in the configuration.

The combination of the right model with a continuously running AI Agent that's reachable via WhatsApp, Slack or your website makes AI truly usable in daily business operations. Want to know more? Check out the possibilities at aiagent.nl.
