What is the difference between an AI agent and ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a general AI assistant that you operate yourself: you open the app, ask a question and steer the result. An AI agent is set up for one process in your business and carries it out with your knowledge and systems, without anyone operating it.
Both run on the same technology: large language models (LLMs). The difference is in the setup. ChatGPT is a product for the person behind the screen. An AI agent is a digital worker with a fixed task, such as answering customer questions via WhatsApp.

What is an AI agent and what can it do?

When is ChatGPT enough?
ChatGPT is enough if you use AI for one-off work that you start and judge yourself:
- Having a text written or rewritten
- Having a document summarized
- Brainstorming about a problem
- Having a file or a table analyzed
For individual knowledge workers ChatGPT, or a comparable assistant such as Claude, is a good choice. You need no technical knowledge and you start the same day.
When do you need an AI agent?
You need an AI agent when the work recurs and continues while you are away:
- Customers ask the same questions, also outside office hours
- You want to be reachable on WhatsApp or another channel your customers already use
- Several colleagues need to work with the same knowledge and the same tone
- The AI has to use data from your own systems
- You want to decide yourself where your data is stored

ChatGPT Business or Enterprise: is that the same as an AI agent?
No. ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise are OpenAI's business subscriptions. Your team gets a shared workspace, admin features and connections to business apps. It remains an assistant that each employee opens and uses personally.

What about privacy and the GDPR?
With both options you are responsible for the personal data you enter. What differs is where the data is processed and which agreements apply.
With ChatGPT that depends on your subscription. According to OpenAI, data from ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise and the API is not used to train models by default. In the free version and in Plus, conversations can be used for training unless you turn that off in the settings. OpenAI offers storage in Europe for ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu and the API (as of October 2026).
